The Holocaust
This poster commissioned by the Central Historical Commission displays the biblical phase "Zachor et asher asah lechah amalek"- "Remember that which Amalek did to you". In the bible, Amalek is a nation that is a pure representation of evil, and the embodiment of that evil spirit is thought to underlie several tragedies in Jewish history shown below. In the top right we see "Churban Habayit"- or "Destruction of The House"- referring to the destruction of the Holy Tabernacle in Jerusalem by both Greek and Roman armies. The top left shows "Shiabud Miztrayim"- or "Slavery in Egypt"- referring the biblical story of "Exodus" wherein the Jews where enslaved by the Egyptians and forced to labor under harsh conditions. The bottom right displays "Gerush Sepharad", the Expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492- a period of great suffering during the Spanish Inquisition and eventual expulsion. "Gezerot Tach VeTat" refers to massacres of Polish Jewry that occured during the years 1648-9 at that hands of a Cossack army led by Bogdan Chmielnicki. At the bottom of the poster is a phrase in Yiddish
